Joseph "Jo" Siffert was a renowned Swiss racing driver, born on July 7, 1936 in Fribourg and tragically deceased on October 24, 1971 in Brands Hatch, England. Siffert is best known for his career in Formula 1 and endurance racing, as well as for his exploits in the famous 1968 race.

Jo Siffert's career

Siffert began his career on motorcycles, before moving on to sports cars and Formula 1. In Formula 1, he raced for several teams, including Lotus, Cooper and BRM, but it was with the privately-owned Rob Walker Racing Team that he achieved some of his greatest successes.

The 1968 race

The race that made Jo Siffert famous was the 1968 British Grand Prix, held at Brands Hatch. It was a memorable race for several reasons:

  1. First Grand Prix win: This race marked Siffert's first Formula 1 victory. Driving a Lotus 49 for the Rob Walker Racing Team, Siffert triumphed despite fierce competition.

  2. Rob Walker Racing Team: This victory is also significant because it was achieved by a private team, a rarity in Formula 1, dominated by the factory teams.

  3. Performance and strategy: Siffert demonstrated not only great skill behind the wheel, but also impeccable strategy. He managed to maintain a lead over such renowned drivers as Graham Hill and Chris Amon.

Jo Siffert remained an emblematic figure in motor racing, not only for his victories, but also for his fighting spirit and sporting attitude. After his tragic death in 1971 during a non-championship Formula 1 race, he left a lasting legacy in the world of motorsport. His home town of Fribourg pays tribute to him through various events and memorials.
