The end of the "Le Mans" start
Drivers running across the track, getting into their cars and starting without harnesses. This is what the "Le Mans" start was all about. It was both spectacular and dangerous for the participants. To demonstrate his disagreement with this procedure, Jacky Ickx decided to walk across the track to his Ford GT40, took the time to buckle up and ended up starting last. It was a powerful gesture, all the more so as John Woolfe was involved in a fatal accident on the very first lap. He was ejected from his vehicle on impact, having not fastened himself down in order to start among the frontrunners. The following year, the start was still in herringbone formation, but with the drivers helmeted and strapped inside their cars.
