The worst accident in the history of Le Mans was also one of the most tragic stories in the world of motorsport. It happened during the June 11, 1955 edition, when 82 spectators plus French driver Pierre Levegh died when his Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR took off. Despite the accident, the organizers decided to go ahead with the race to avoid blocking access to the circuit and thus blocking the ambulances evacuating the injured. The accident sent shockwaves through the motor racing world, leading to the cancellation of many races in 1955, including the French, German and Swiss Grands Prix. The latter banned all motorized circuit racing in its territory until 2007. An accident which led to new safety regulations for drivers and spectators in all categories.
