The Midnight Sun Anecdote
During the 1987 Dakar Rally, Vatanen had a remarkable experience. In the middle of the desert, during a night stage, he encountered technical problems with his Peugeot 205 T16 Grand Raid. Isolated in the desert with few resources and facing extreme conditions, he had to spend the night in his car.
In the early hours of the morning, as the sun rose over the desert, creating a surreal scene, Vatanen managed to repair his car in an improvised manner. He then resumed the race and, against all the odds, not only finished the stage, but also ended up winning the rally that year.
This anecdote highlights not only Vatanen's technical skills, but also his determination, resilience and adventurous spirit - qualities that have made him a legend in the world of rally-raid.
